Innovative medical device: HASOMED nominated for Hugo Junkers Prize 2019

The Hugo Junkers Prize has been awarded in Saxony-Anhalt (Germany) since 28 years for pioneering innovations from science, industry and trade. HASOMED applied this year with RehaIngest. The swallowing measurement system supports speech therapists, occupational therapists and doctors in the treatment of dysphagia.

RehaIngest is a non-invasive medical device with which swallowing of patients can be messured, recorded and visualized. This objective data complements the experience of practitioners and, since the data can be recorded, allows long-term comparisons over days, weeks and months during the therapy. RehaIngest combines electromyography and bioimpedance signals to measure the pharyngeal phase of swallowing.

Not only therapists benefit from RehaIngest. The system visualizes swallowing activity on the screen. During treatment, patients can see for themselves how well they have swallowed. RehaIngest also offers swallowing training for various swallowing manoeuvres (e.g. the Mendelsohn manoeuvre) in a playful way. This possibility of the therapy system helps to motivate the patient to train regularly. Dysphagia occurs most frequently in people aged 60 and over.

With these functions RehaIngest contributes to modern dysphagia treatment. Therefore, the system is nominated for the Hugo-Junkers Award in the category "Most Innovative Products, Services and Business Models".

The prize is awarded by the Ministry of Economics, Science and Digitisation of Saxony-Anhalt. People and companies, whose ideas are used to develop innovative processes, products and services as well as business models, will be honoured with this prize. The Hugo-Junkers Prize is endowed with a total of 80,000 euros.
